You have just started a brand-new ecommerce business. You know what you want to sell, and who you want to sell it to ... now what?

Should you hire a programmer to create www.buymynicestuff.com or create a basic Shopify website. Should you start listing your items on Amazon or Ebay?

Though it would be in my benefit to tell you that you need to hire someone like me to create a custom ecommerce experience, the mere fact that you are wondering about this question means that you are not prepared for what you are about to undertake. In actuality, the first thing you need to do is learn.

I cannot tell you how many ecommerce businesses I have seen fail because the owner does not actually know anything about how to run an ecommerce business. Honestly, your main focus needs to be on acquiring knowledge and skills. Forget about the money for now, because you do not have the skills needed in order to generate it.

Start by researching the following topics:

  1. Digital Marketing and Advertising (People need to know about your store and products)
  2. Ecommerce Fulfillment (You need to be able to actually get your products to the customer)
  3. Managing Customer Relationship (You want to get repeat business)

Once you have a grasp of these topics as it relates to ecommerce, you will know exactly what you will need to prioritize and in what order to get your ecommerce store rolling. In addition to this, these skills are highly transferable to many other types of businesses. Trust me, you will not regret it.
